“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith.” Galations 6:10
I’m a firm believer that there is no greater feeling than going out and doing something for somebody. Specifically going out and doing something good for somebody. Some of the best moments of my life were when I had something to do with putting a smile on someone else’s face.
It’s never a bad thing to be a good person. If you have a desire to go out and be a light in someone’s darkness, by all means go out and do it. Especially during the times we are going through right now. There’s never a wrong time to do something right. However, this is something that many of us tend to struggle with.
Life is crazy. I don’t have to be a rocket scientist to let you all know that. A lot of us live very busy lives. Whether it’s our job, a sport we’re playing, school, or many other things that occupy our lives. Sometimes we get so caught up with what’s going on with ourselves, that we forget that there’s a whole world out there that is in need of kindness and encouragement.
A lot of people feel that in order to do something good for somebody it has to be something grand or immaculate to possess value. Sometimes we may feel inadequate or unprepared to go out and to help make a difference in someone’s life. This way of thinking can cause us to become complacent and make us wait for the perfect or right time to do good.
Right decisions are not dependent on the boundaries of time as it always leads to fruitful results. – Thoughts Adda
Good doesn’t always have to be donating six figures to charity or funding the construction of a student development center. It can be as simple as smiling and telling someone “good morning”, or it can be in the form of helping an elder woman cross the street.
It’s important for us to understand that we are not perfect people. We never were, and we never will be. There’s a chance that we could do everything in our power to help someone and it may still seem like it’s not enough. But I’m here to tell you that God will not waste the good that you pour out into the world.
God is our guide. He’s always going to lead us where we need to be. However, that doesn’t mean that we should wait around for Him to tell us what to do. It’s awesome to have a heart that desires to do good, but with that also should come a willingness to make the necessary sacrifices to do that good. The more we are willing to be used, God will provide more opportunities for us to serve Him.
In Acts 16, the apostle Paul set out to do some missionary work on some of the churches that were forming. He and some others traveled through Asia, but the Holy Spirit forbade them from preaching there. They then tried to go to a place called Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus didn’t allow them once again. Despite this, they kept seeking places to go spread the Word of the Lord. However, one night while they were sleeping, Paul had a vision of a man begging for him to go to Macedonia and help them. Immediately, Paul and the others got up and set out for Macedonia knowing that the vision had come from the Lord.
In this passage, we can see that Paul wasn’t sitting around and waiting to be pointed where to go and in the right direction. Instead, he was constantly trying to do good and spread the word of the Lord. He was on the go. The most important thing to recognize is that God didn’t let him wander aimlessly. The Holy Spirit was guiding Paul and eventually lead him to where he was needed.
A ship that isn’t moving cannot be steered.
God uses many different ways to steer us in the right direction. Maybe you want to do some mission work in another country, but your flights keep getting cancelled. That could be God’s way of telling you that He needs you elsewhere. Perhaps you are working towards becoming a nurse, but instead you are called to write books and become an author. God works in very mysterious ways, but we should always be on the go. We should always make time to be a blessing towards someone.
Nothing but fruitful results can come out of doing good. Even if the person or people on the receiving end of you kind act respond in a sour way or don’t accept it, you can’t and shouldn’t feel ashamed because it’s not on you but it’s on them. And if you look on the other side of the spectrum, doing something good for someone can inspire them to do the same for someone else. But you will never know unless you take the leap of faith, trust in the Lord to guide you, and continue to be on the go.
You don’t have to travel to different countries and be like Paul in order to do something good. God will provide many opportunities for it in your own city, your own neighborhood, and even in your own household. As long as you have a desire and willingness to do it, God will make a way and guide you.
Oftentimes, we ask ourselves, “Should I wait for God to provide me instructions before I go out and do good?” However, sometimes we should ask ourselves, “What if God is waiting on me?”
